Amanda Faine-Gomes
Student Sponsorship
Amanda works with numbers in her “day job” as a Senior Accounts Receivable Accountant with Absolute Software in Vancouver, British Columbia. When she came across HIMH’s volunteer opportunity to advocate for our children in Haiti through the corporate giving and volunteering portal, Benevity, she leapt at the chance to work with us.
Amanda immigrated to Vancouver from Brazil with her partner, and Akira (her fur baby) in 2021. She worked part-time while working toward her Masters of Business Administration program, graduating in April 2022. Now working full time at Absolute, she says daily learning opportunities are what motivates her and she “loves being able to get out from behind my desk and engage in conversation with new people”.
Prior to immigrating to Canada, Amanda volunteered teaching English as a Second Language, and working with a homeless shelter distributing food and clothes to those in need. She brought this experience to her work with the Vancouver Food Bank, assisting people to access their services and support.
Yet, these opportunities had not met her desire to volunteer her skills and talents in a way that was deeply meaningful to her. HIMH’s work and mission appealed to her immediately.
Amanda says, “I believe that education is the foundation for everything, therefore every child should have the right and chance to have access to school. I achieved so many goals on my own, and want to give back to society [in this way]”.
Amanda says her role with HIMH to advocate for our students, communicate with our sponsors on a regular basis, and cultivate new sponsors for students that do not yet have a sponsor “offers [me] the chance to go deeper into [new skill areas] that I don’t normally work with in my corporate job”.
